How Do I Configure SMTP?

Important: Do not phone us about SMTP servers or to help you set up your email account, we will not help you if you are not an existing client of ours.

Contact us [on a support email] (with your customer code & username) to supply you with an email account to authenticate against our servers to configure your SMTP settings.

The SMTP server that requires authentication, here’s how to set it up:

  • SMTP server: mail.ibits.co.za
  • SMTP username: Your full ibits address (e.g. example@ibits.co.za)
  • SMTP password: Your password
  • SMTP port: 587
  • SMTP TLS/SSL required: yes

We provide an open relay to the customers on our network : smtp.ibits.co.za
This service is supplied “as is” and may or may not work all the time, it should be used as a last resort.

Gmail (Google’s free email solution)

We highly recommend that you register a free gmail account for you at mail.google.com and route all your email through gmail. This will allow you access to gmail’s smtp settings, as well as provide you with other possible benefits, like imap access to access your email on your phone as well as your computer and an always available backup of all your email both sent and received.

Using Gmail Outgoing Server with any email address

Google’s SMTP server requires authentication, so here’s how to set it up:

  • SMTP server (outgoing mail): smtp.gmail.com
  • SMTP username: Your full Gmail address (e.g. example@gmail.com)
  • SMTP password: Your Gmail password
  • SMTP port: 465
  • SMTP TLS/SSL required: yes

OPTIONAL: In order to store a copy of outgoing emails in your Gmail or Google Apps Sent folder, log into your Gmail or Google Apps email Settings and click on the Forwarding/IMAP tab and scroll down to the IMAP Access section: IMAP must be enabled in order for emails to be properly copied to your sent folder.

NOTE: Google automatically rewrites the From line of any email you send via its SMTP server to the default Send mail as email address in your Gmail or Google Apps email account Settings. You need to be aware of this nuance because it affects the presentation of your email, from the point of view of the recipient, and it may also affect the Reply-To setting of some programs.

Workaround: In your Google email Settings, go to the Accounts tab/section and make “default” an account other than your Gmail/Google Apps account. This will cause Google’s SMTP server to re-write the From field with whatever address you enabled as the default Send mail as address.


Most hosting providers provide you with access to webmail. The webmail address is usually found at webmail.yourdomain.tld, so if your website can be found at www.ibits.co.za, it usually means webmail can be accessed at webmail.ibits.co.za – you should be presented with a login screen, and you should use your full email address as username.

The webmail interface can also be used to change your password – please always use a secure password consisting of lowercase & uppercase text, numbers and special characters like !@#$%^&*()-_+=}{][|, if an unauthorised person gains access to your email, he or she will most likely be able to steal your identity.

Using your own Domain’s Outgoing Server

If you have a hosted account with ibits you may use the domain’s outgoing server by following these steps:

    • Set outgoing server to mail.yourdomain.co.za
    • NB: Replace the “yourdomain.co.za” part with your own domain name, for example if your domain is mycompany.com
      then your outgoing server would be mail.mycompany.com
    • Enable Outgoing Server Authentication (on mobile phones this is called ‘Require Sign-in’)
    • If prompted for a username and password for your outgoing server, please use the same as for your incoming server
